What Is Endovascular Surgery?

Endovascular surgery is a relatively modern, minimally invasive procedure. Instead of making a large incision in the abdomen, the doctor creates a small opening in the groin area to access the femoral artery.

Through this opening, a fabric tube called a graft (stent graft) is inserted and positioned inside the aorta. The stent graft helps redirect blood flow, preventing it from entering the aneurysm and reducing the risk of rupture. Once in place, the graft remains inside the aorta permanently. The procedure typically takes between one to three hours.

Patients usually stay in the hospital for a few days and can return to normal activities within one to two weeks. Like any medical procedure, endovascular surgery carries some risk of complications. Regular post-surgery check-ups and imaging tests are necessary to monitor the success of the procedure and ensure proper healing. In some cases, additional treatments or follow-up surgeries may be required.
